Use these clematis to grow in the mixed herbaceous border with other perennials or in patio pots. They are hardy flowering year after year and easy to grow and are mid to late summer flowering and they dont get clematis wilt. Many have very fragrant flowers. They all like well drained soil. Some are self supporting, others are non clinging and can scramble over other shrubs, roses or provide ground cover.
All herbaceous clematis are suitable to use as cut flowers, excellent for flower arranging. Like other perennials they die back in winter to re-emerge in the spring.
I have split them into two separate groups those that are known as Heracleifolia cultivars ranging in height from 1-4ft, requiring little or no support. The other group, ranging in height from 2-8ft. Prune the heracleifolias in late spring March/April.
